He wonders whether he did the right thing by leaving; it's like he's standing in the dark and he has no idea of how he got there, and there's nothing he can touch to help him find a way out.

All of these doubts, building and scraping away the hope that had once been, only to find there was no reason to doubt -- such a satisfying ending. Lovely piece of writing.
